The WooSox wouldn't be living up to their logo if they didn't make a smiley out of this
When Chris Sale gives you a meme, you pounce
In case you haven’t seen it yet, Chris Sale had a meltdown in his rehab start this week for the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, and took out his aggression on a poor TV monitor that was reportedly already broken:
I can’t believe some of the outrage I’m reading today from pundits I really respect, such as Dan Shaughnessy:
Can we please not hear the nonsense that it’s OK for Chris Sale to damage Polar Park because, well, you know . . . he’s such an intense competitor? The Red Sox continue to go to any lengths to protect and defend their erstwhile ace.
I’m sure he knows something we don’t. He’s Dan Shaughnessy after all. But let’s consider the aftermath:
Sale replaced the flatscreen, which cost him $1,100
Sale spent $6,000 on food for 55 WooSox players and staff, reportedly including meals from one of New England’s best steakhouses, One Eleven Chop House.
Outbursts like this happen a lot more behind closed doors, away from the cameras, than we might imagine. And fans appreciate players who show emotion.
Anyways, I’m writing this because this is how the Woo Sox responded today:
As they should.
You know what their logo is, right? An homage to the iconic smiley face design created by Worcester native Harvey Ball in the 1960’s:
But why stop there?
The next time Sale tosses a gem at Fenway, make some “How It Started | How It’s Going” art with the broken monitor.
The next time Sale visits Worcester, greet him with a commemorative smashed monitor.
Make t-shirts for the one-year anniversary this time next year.
When The Stickman gives you something meme-worthy, live up to your logo and make some joy out of it.
